The National Assembly or The Jatiya Sangsad has 300 members elected for
a five year term in single-seat constituencies.
The Ninth National Parliamentary Elections were held on 29 December 2008. The two main parties in the election were the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Khaleda Zia, and the Awami League, led by Sheikh Hasina.
The election resulted in a landslide victory for the Awami League-led grand alliance bagging 263 seats out the 300. The main rival four-party alliance led by the BNP received only 32 seats, with the remaining four going to independent candidates. Sheikh Hasina was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
During the elections that were held October
1, 2001 the BNP obtained the highest
number of votes. The leader of the BNP, Begum
Khaleda Zia was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
The previous parliamentary elections were held June 12, 1996, with the Awami League led by Sheikh
Hasina Wazed winning the largest number of seats.
The previous universal elections were held in 1991 and was won by BNP

complex was designed by the world renowned architect Louis
Kahn. Kahn's architecture is notable for its simple, platonic
forms and compositions. Through the use of brick and poured-in place
concrete masonry, he developed a contemporary and monumental architecture
that maintained a sympathy for the site. |
