After the crackdown, Bangladesh declared her independence and embarked on a nine-month long fight for freedom against
the marauding Pakistani troops.
On April 17, in a liberated section of Bangladesh, the exiled government of Bangladesh
formally took office.
The freedom figters were organized as an army under the leadership of
Bengali officers who were in the Pakistan army. General MAG Osmany was
the C-in-C. The nation was divided into a number of sectors and each sector
had a sector commander in charge.
