While reading some of the comments made by
the visitors of this wonderful site on our
Bangladesh,I could not help but read a few comments made apparently by some crackpot Pakistnis. The degree of audacity and the ignorance they have reflected in their comments, in broken English, lack minimal civility and commonsense. Most amazing among other is the fact that they claim to be Moslems! I strongly believe that these are the fanatic zealots who have earned nothing but a bad name for Islam.Fortunately, most of the Pakistani people are decent and peace-loving people as far as I know.
One request: please try to be as objective and as unbiased in your presentation of "facts" while trekking the slippery path of history. It's just a reminder.

You deserve a lot of thanks and appreciations for the feat you have accomplised through your construction of superb virtualbangladesh website that presents us with a veritable source of information about Bangladesh.

Carl's own idiolect genuine Chinese: Hsin1-ch'ien1-nien2 k'uai4-le4 (Xin-qian-nian kuai-le) 'New-thousand-year happiness' [1 = high-level tone, 2 = high-rising tone, 4 = falling tone; the first is in Wade-Giles romanization; the second is in pinyin romanization] is better expressed the way the Chinese newspapers are using:
Kung1He4 Ch'ien1Hsi1 (Gong-he qian-xi) 'Reverently congratulate thousand-(Happy New Year)' [in which, hsi1 (xi) literally means 'divine blessings; auspicious' (as applied to any New Year's time)].
How about in Bengali?

I think this site is one that will provide a great resource to those who aspire to learn the Bengali language. It definitely begins to provide the building blocks that you need to fully learn the languauge. I look forward seeing the site when it has been completed. I would love to be able to write a sentence and have help translating it. You may also want to provide the ability to download Bengali fonts, it can take the learning experience a step further.

Thanks for the wonderful service!

Hi there,
I will gladly appreciate if you would include some of 'Nirmalandu Gun's' poems.
I tried to search it by his name, but it would not show up anything.
Please be kind of doing this, because everyone has different taste. And also try to publish more poems about Rabindranath.
Thank you.

"The MOON -- Cool!!!! This year will be the first full moon to occur on the winter solstice, Dec. 22, commonly called the first day of winter. Since a full moon on the winter solstice occurred in conjunction with a lunar perigee (point in the moon's orbit that is closest to Earth), the moon will appear about 14% larger than it does at apogee (the point in its elliptical orbit that is farthest from the Earth). Because the Earth is also several million miles closer to the sun at this time of the year than in the summer, sunlight striking the moon is about 7% stronger, making it brighter. Also, this will be the closest perigee of the Moon of the year, since the moon's orbit is constantly shifting (precessing). If the weather is clear and there is a snow cover where you live, it is believed that even car headlights will be superfluous. On December 21, 1866, the Lakota Sioux took advantage of this combination of occurrences and staged a devastating retaliatory ambush on soldiers in the Wyoming Territory. In laymen's terms, it will be a superbright full moon, much more than the usual, AND it hasn't happened this way for 133 years! Our ancestors 133 years ago saw this. Our descendents 133 or so years from now will see this. But we get to see it in 2 weeks! Now how cool is that? "

I recently got hold of a book on archeology in Bangladesh. It is a coffee table book which covers all the major archeologic sites in Bangladesh from 4th Centure BC till 1900 AD.(30-40 images). Size is 8/11 inches. I have an extra copy of the book I can send to you or I can make them digitized if you like. Please let me know,

Virtual Bangladesh is a wonderful site, completely absorbing and very interesting. The graphics, items links and writing are all a credit to you. I have had the good luck to fall in love with a fantastic man from Bangladesh, and knew nothing about the country before I knew him. Your site has taught me so much, and also let me impress my man with little bits of Bangla and virtual postcards. Thank you and the best of luck in the future!

To whom it may concern:
I appreciate very much your effort putting Virtual Bangladesh site together and keeping it up-to-date. It really helps us keep going abroad while away from family and home. As a probashi Bangladeshi, I would like to see the Band song "Kirton khola nodire aamar...", by "Chime", which is a reflection of probashi home coming image. Another hit song by Chime, "Nati khati bela geilo...." could be a significant addition to this site. I really would appreciate your action on my request. Thanks.

I think Bangladesh is the most wonderful country in the world (next to the U.S. of course). The greenery of the fauna, the beauty of the oceans, and the warm hearted people make this one of the top countries in the world.

In fact, I met and married my beautiful Bangladeshi wife, Rina, because she was so giving and understanding. She raises our two sons,Ryan and Eric, with such loving that I've never seen with any American women.

Bangladesh is #1!

THE QUALITY OF THIS WEB SITE IS QUITE AMAZING ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU TALK TO PEOPLE ABOUT BANGLADESH AND ALL THEY THINK OF IS A COUNTRY THAT HAS POVERTY AND IS ABOUT 30 YEARS BEHIND THE REST OF THE WORLD. I HAVE MANY BENGALI FRENDS IN OLDHAM UK AND THEY ENCOURAGED ME TO VISIT BANGLADESH. THE INFORMATION THAT THESE WEB PAGES PROVIDE ARE VERY USEFULL AS INFORMATION AT THE PUBLIC LIBRARY IS VERY LIMITED. ANY WAY ENOUGH OF MY RAMBLINGS ,KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND I WILL REVISIT THIS WEB SITE IN DECEMBER 99 WHEN I COME BACK FROM MY HOLIDAY IN BANGLADESH. P.S. WHY IS IT WHEN I TALK TO NEW PEOPLE IN BANGLA ARE THEY SUPRISED.

Dear Zunaid Kazi: I saw your reply on Feb. 5, 1999, to Babar, as follows:" Virtual Bangladesh comment: Thank you for your comments. The History section of this site has a lot of information about the venets and genocide of 1971." My question is, What are "venets"? Could it be vignettes (little anecdotes of poignant interest from someone's life) or vendettas (acts of revenge [from an Italian word])? The Oxford English Dictionary shows "venets" to be an obsolete form of "vignettes", but the word is seemingly inappropriate with "genocide"! Could it be a misspelling for some other word? Thanks for any reply, Carl Masthay, carl.masthay@mosby.com (in St. Louis, Missouri, USA).

Congratulations on a wonderful web site, I came across it quite by accident whilst just browsing around and can't even remember how I got here - but it is now in my Bookmarks so that I can easily find it again.
The pole on whether Bangladesh cricket is ready for Test status was quite amusing considering the plight of ENGLISH crciket at the moment - I think Bangladesh can teach us a number of things when it comes to sport.
Again - congratulations from an Englishman in England.

Be Is Mi Allah, Aar Rehman, Aar Raheem

Assalam-O-Alaikum,

I am a Pakistani animal who spent about 5 years in Pakistan Military. Now I am in the USA. During my 5 years I was with the ISI and the Feild Intelligence Beareu or FIB. For 3 months we were trained in the lessons learned from the formation o f the independent state of Bengladesh. This is what I learned. You, in your hate red for Pakistan, might disagree, but these are the facts.
After the 1965 war in which people from the East and West Pakistan both participated and fough t side by side, India was left shocked and humiliated. Specially by the 4 Artill ery Corps. The Indian Air Force (IAF) was in ruins and the country was totally d evestated. At that time Indias now top intelligence agency, the Research and Ana lysis Wing (RAW) comprised of roughly 6,000 officers while Pakistans 3,200 ISI o ffiers had performed gallantly (This included about 700 Bengla officers) From 1 965 to 21st december 1971 India beefed up it's RAW with help from Israel's MOSSA D and Shen Biet and Russia's KGB, to about 28,000 higly trained offiers. Compare d to that by 1071 the ISI had only about 6,000 locally trained officers. Our int elligence was NOTHING compared to RAW. From 1965 to 1976 RAW operated 40+ terror ist camps along the borders of India-Bangladesh. The training included, Propagan da, Explosives, General Terror in the population, Risening of so called freedom movements, and many more to name a few. ISI also identified, Mujeed-ur-Rehman, G en, yahya Khan, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, and a number of leaders belonging to the re ligious groups from Bangladesha nd Pakistan, as having "constant suspicious cont acts" with the Indian government.
Even before the election results came out, RAW agents we going around Bangladesh spreading talk to freedom among the people. East Pakistan was always a thorn in the Indian Side. When elections ende d, Mr. Bhutto said, "anyone who goes to East Pakistn to recognize the illegal Ba ngla leaders will have his legs personally broken by me"
ISI being smal l and not the well trained at that time could not do anything as it too was bein g used by Bhutto to spy on political leaders, but we were aware of his corrupt n ature. When this totally blew up, RAW agents initilized "Operation Wedge" and we nt on a rampage, attacking Pakistan Army barracks, Check posts, Bangla Police st ations. Dressed as who? Students, local people, and police officers. RAW agents were constantly putting words in the mouths of Bangla Freedom Fighters. Some Pak istan Army units took it upon themselves and ruthlessly murdered innocent Bangla brothers and sisters. This caused an uproar in the Bangla population. pakistan air lifted 9 and 16 Infantry divisons in a hurry to East Pakistan. But Gen Niyaz i (another traitor) conveniently left out the heavy artillery which had so badly beaten the Indians in 1965 from the air lift. Air cover was also denied, and wa s limited to a few air craft already in the bases.
India started its so called "help" to Bangladesh and attacked East Pakistan, both of us forgot that we are Muslims, and that acording to Allahs prophet Mohammed (SAW) we should hav e been like one body. We played into the hands of the Hindus and ended up fighti ng eachother. Pakistan army was forced to fight with one hand behind its back, R AW had a field day, they went around killing Pakistani Soldiers and the Pakistan i Soldiers avenged the Martyers by butchring the innocent Bengali's. RAW operati ons were in full swing, and they increased their propaganda machine in full swin g.
Finally, orders were issued to the Pakistan army from Yahya and Niaz i to surrender, this surprised even the Indian General in command of the Indian front, who had only seen papers of a "cease fire" a day before.... Bangladesh wa s formed. No doubt about it both sides commited stupid blunders and played into mistrust.
The Indian priminister later remarked, "today we have avenged the 1965 war" Pakistani soldiers we humiliated back in Pakistan. Field General Court Martials were held in secret for the known cases of brutality by Pakistani officers and soldiers, 130 received death sentences which were promptly carried out within 2-3 days. About 400 received 30-45 years regiorous imprisonment and are still rotting in army prisons.
Let's take a look at the post 1971 wa r era. India, which claimed it self to be Bangladesh's friend started acting lik e a bully towards the sovergin state of Bangladesh. We realized our mistakes and embrased each other again. Now every year about 25 Bangladesh Army offiers of the rank of Colonel attent the Command and Staff College in Quetta. Pakistan Army has pledged to help Bangaldesh in any crisis. India always followed the British saying of divide and rule, in the Indian Command College Core Cirriculum course on International politics it clearly reads....."Your neighbouring country can never be your friend, if ties are normal, following should be the rule.... To be an ally of Inida should be hazardous and to be a friend should be fatal, that is the only way to maintain operational superiority"
Bangladesh is India's neighbor and was once it's friend... you think for yourself...

Recently NEWS: Indian army crossed over the border with Bangladesh and took over a river. They only withdrew back after shelling and firing from the vigilant Bangladesh Army. Plus, Pakistan enters into contract to sell about 50 re-equipped fighter planes to Bangladesh.

Who seems to be the friend now, and who is the enemy. We have a saying in Pakistan Army. When a Hindu hugs, he is always going to stab you in the back with his free hand.

What I really want to say? Pakistan and Bangladesh made millions of mistakes in 1971, but they were innocent mistakes. We played in the hands of external powers and corrupt leaders like Mujibur Rehman, Bhutto, yahya and Ayub Khan. Time will heal everything and lift the fog. Now that India is a nuclear power, the only country that needs to really beef up it's military and defence resources is NOT China, NOT Pakistan, but Bangladesh. Mark this day that you have read this, because I can assure you that the threat from India will come true in the near future, it cant expand West so it's going to expand East.
As a Pakistani Soldier I say we owe it to you to be of assistance, we don't need anything from you. We just want to be on ever better terms...

Have you seen some of the contents of VB Discussion forums? It looks like the website adminstrator does not frequent or monitor these pages enough. It is good that you have provided a platform for us, but it needs to be monitored more vigorously(sp), then it seems to be at the moment, there is a lot of foul language that is left on the site to offend visitors to the site and shouldnt be, there are a lot of children visiting these sites, do you want them to be exposed to this kind of language, would you want your child or children exposed to them?

Hi my name is Zia, I was just surfing the net and came across your website, and my comment is, IT IS BRILLLLLLLLLLLLL. This is just what we Bengladeshies need, it has everything we need to keep in touch with the going on's in our mother country. I can now go up to my friends and talk proudly about my country, that although its small it has a big heart. Finding this site is the highlight of my day. I am a 21 year old medical student at Oxford university, and balieve me I can't wait for my friends to see your site, I have been waiting for this day for 3 years and no more will my ears hear "BANGLADESH, BANGLADESH!? WHATS BANGLADESH?"
This site is a gem and I believe it has only just begun to glitter with brilliance. All credit to you guys, keep up the good work.

I liked ur website.Specifically the maps.I wish u will keep working on it to make
it even more informative.I think u should put some of the pictures from the 71 war.I am neither anti pak nor anti Indo.I am a true Bangladeshi.Simple as that.
I think every nation should be proud of their bravery. It was one of the biggest
event in our history.I am sure people will love to see some of the pictures from our liberation war.
I liked ur map from the Mughol era.U can also put some information about the
nawabs specifically the last independent nawab of Bengal. That would be a nice
touch.
How about the costumes and fabrics that are made in Bangladesh?
how about providing some pictures of fine silk/cotton/jamdani/grameen check
panjabis/saris etc etc.Well if u really do that please do get the professional
picture done by professional Dhakai good models(U might get help from arong or any other latest disigners). We always make a mistake
of not choosing the finest ones.
well kazi and Tammy ,u are the masters but Tammy u are not from Bangladesh
and Kazi u are a guy.So I thaught u might like to have some suggestions about
the costume department.I am more than sure it will attract more sufers to ur
web .Specially the foreigners who want to know more about this country.
About ur web page, well what can I say?U are the best!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kudos.Hats off to u.

Dear Mr. Zunaid,
I was glad to see a home page of my mother land in the web site but at the same time I was highly shocked to see the home page graphics, I mean a tiger (cat!) behind a hut and again a ox cart in front of the hut - keeping the national monument at the back - do you think this is a good way to introduce our country? Please think about it and if possible try to give a better graphics. Your various datas are also not regularly updated which again gives a wrong impression. I hope you don't take my remarks personnaly.

Hello there.
Well I was browsing through the comments and I have to say they were interesting. This site is a good site and I am hoping to see additions of other links to the site. The issue of Bangladesh, Pakistan and India is that of much debate. I don't think one can pinpoint any of the other countries as the enemy. There has been conflicts and some of them ended in bitter terms. Now lets not say that the Indians were the enemies and the Bangladeshis were the betrayers. No one is perfect and everyone had their own share of imperfections in history. Lets not take the imperfections of others to make ourselves look better. Thank you.
Sohail [04/01/99 23:02:06 MST]

Hi Zunaid and all Bangladeshi friends!
I am a Pakistani. I visited your site. It's your good effort for
your country. Today I wanna deliver a message for all Bangladeshi friends using your page.
Although it was a bitter experience for all of us when Pakistan
split into two portions. I think besides all other things, their
was also a great role of our mean enemy India behind all those happenings.
You can see that India still create problems for both nations.
Anyway now Bangladesh is an independent states. We respect it.
I really wish best of luck for Bangladesh.
We really wanna see Bangladesg a prosperous country of the world.
And Thanks a lot for a very warm support for our cricket team in
Dhaka, When we won Ist asian test champion ship. And when our skipp
Wasim Akram said Bangladesh as his second homeland because loving behaviour of Bangladeshis.
Again Long live Pakistan & Bangladesh friendship.
Long live Pakistan.

As an ex-BUET, here is a suggestion. Images of BUET buildings are in B&W, and really small in size. Can we get color and largers images?

Very informative site. However, I was looking for the word TURTLE, which was not included. Does Bengali have a different script other than the Roman alphabet?

Dear Mr. Zunaid Kazi,

I visited some topics of this site. It's starting is really nice. I would like to see the major plants/trees and fishes of Bangladesh. I wish your continuous efforts to make it a unique resource in information super-highway.
Charlene [03/06/99 14:41:04 MST]

This is a good site on Bangladesh. I hope Bangladesh will catch up with the development of the rest of the world soon. I'll go there to visit again.

In your travel section do include Sylhet. The tea-gardents if not anything eles there makes it one of the last unspoilt eco-tourism destinations in the world!!

Tanveer Moin [03/04/99 14:45:43 MST]

I would like to share these emails with you if it helps the victim a little...
Thanks

This site is perfect and well balanced for as a presentation of a country. I did not know much of Bangladesh, than the news brought on Swedish national TV, and honestly, it has only been bad news shown there. I realy appreciate what i found.
Keep on the good work, do not try to overdo the site. Keep it informative and easy.

I want to politely point out a little mistake. This is found in the LIFESTYLE section of the Tour page. In that section if I foll0w the "Festival and Cultural Traditions->Traditional Holidays and Festival" link or at http://www.virtualbangladesh.com/bd.days_trad.html, I see at the near bottom where it mentions about the Mughal Emperors. They were here not 14 centuries ago (that's about year 600 or so at the time of prophet Muhammad (Peace on him)), but rather in the 16th-19th century.
1526: Babor's victory at Panipath
1857-1858: Bahadur Shah, the last Mughal Emperor was deposed

I was looking for a Full blown Bangla Calendar, but could not find it, found the above instead.

sincerely

As a foreign affairs correspondant for a regional monthly, I often have to get background information on countries I am reporting on. Your site has been an immense help. Keep up the good work!

Babar [02/05/99 15:12:58 MST]

I stumbled upon ur site while researching about the background of events that led to the break up of pakistan and creation of bangladesh.

In my research I have read several books and learnt that Banglabandhu
Sheikh Mujib and his government claimed that pakistan army killed about 3 million people from march to dec 1971. But none of the books mentions any incident other than the march 25-26 military operation and the 16 december killing of intellectuals. I would like to see the details of massacres committed by the pakistan army since it is incomprehensible that they can kill 3 million in just two nights.

Please include the details of any such incident

Liked your web site good design.

Babar
Virtual Bangladesh comment: Thank you for your comments. The History section of this site has a lot of information about the venets and genocide of 1971. Just a quick note, the war lasted for 9 moneths and the killings were not restricted to those two days only. Good luck on your research.

hi, my name is Paul Baker and I'm a Research Assistant at Lancaster
University working on the MILLE (minority languages engineering project)
in the Department of Linguistics.

Our aims are to investigate the availablity of resources for people
of NIML-speaking communities in the UK. NIMLs are non-indigenous
minority languages such as Bengali, Sylheti, Urdu, Punjabi, Chinese etc.
To date a lot of linguistic research has been carried out on English
and European languages, but NIMLs have been ignored. We want to address
this.

Part of the way that we work is by collecting written samples of
NIML data which have been stored in computer format. This can include
books, letters, pamphlets, newsletters on the web etc. I was wondering
if you knew of any such electronic data e.g. in Bengali or Slyheti
which the owners would be prepared to let us use to build what
we call a "corpus" of NIML language - by building large collections
of such data we are able to examine the language in more detail,
using computers to search for patterns etc. We are a non-profit
making organisation, and would not exploit or give the data
to anyone else intending to profit financially from it.

If you can't help us yourself - perhaps you could let us know
the address(es) of anyone who you think might hold such data?

Best wishes

Paul Baker.

This is the most comprhensive, well-maintained and upto mark Bangladeshi web site I have seen so far. You are one of the few people who are trying to keep our proud up. I really appreciate your effort. However, I have a small suggestion regarding the 'education'. Listing BIT's as engineering college is not appropriate. As you know, in 1985 they are converted to autonomus institute just like universities. So actually they are equivalent to universities (Our Education minister also mentioned the same thing in the NP). Also BIT Khulna has gradute program (Actual MS degree, not the 1 year Masters degree )which many of the Bangladeshi universities do not have. From the very begining we have noticed that since the word unviersity is not with our name, most of the Bangladeshi general people donot recognize as university which is very disappointing for us.I hope you'll understand my concern. If you need further information regrading BIT Khulna ( Academics, Enrollment, Foreign Students)please let me know.
Again, many thanks for this nice web site.

Why are all references to tribal or indigenous populations in the "past tense"
? Have these populations disappeared under
Islamic government ?
Virtual Bangladesh comment: The numbers are in the past tense because the data is old. Furthermore, Bangladesh does not have an Islamic government.
